Daniel Johnson raised more than $45,000 than his opponent, two-term incumbent Congressman Patrick McHenry, during the most recent fundraising period. Johnson will report approximately $365,000 cash on hand for the third fundraising quarter of 2008 and almost $240,000 raised during the quarter, his most successful to date.
Johnson remains on an equal playing field with McHenry, who is heavily financed by large corporations and special interests, including $809,000 from the financial services industry.
McHenry's donor list includes several of the companies responsible for the current financial crisis: Freddie Mae, Fannie Mac, Countrywide, Washington Mutual, Bear Sterns, and AIG. On June 30, 2008, McHenry loaned his campaign $175,000 from his personal funds.
"Our fundraising success shows the incredible strength of the coalition of supporters Daniel Johnson has built across Western North Carolina," said Campaign Manager Lauren Moore, "We will have the resources to share Daniel's extraordinary background in public service and his commitment to fighting for Western North Carolina's working families. The campaign will be able to inform voters about how Congressman McHenry advocated for the subprime lenders who caused this financial crisis and worked to privatize Social Security."
