With students headed back to school across the state, Pat McCrory has finally admitted his real education agenda: vouchers, vouchers and vouchers. The Burlington Times-News reported yesterday that at the Alamance County Republican Party Headquarters in Graham, McCrory said he was “advocating vouchers.”
That makes it a flip-flop-flip for Pat.
After being an early and strong supporter of vouchers during the Republican primary…
During a Republican primary debate, McCrory was asked, “Do you support school vouchers and would you favor raising the cap on charter schools which is currently set by the State Legislature?” McCrory replied, “Yes and yes.” [Republican Gubernatorial primary debate, 3/26/08]
…McCrory actually denied supporting vouchers to NC’s school administrators:
When talking to school administrators, McCrory reversed himself, “They’re trying to hit the word vouchers as a political hot button, and I’ve never even mentioned the word, because it’s not going to happen. It’s just not going to happen.” [McCrory press availability at Conference of School Administrators, 7/2/08]
…But then yesterday, McCrory once again pledged his support for private school vouchers:
According to news reports, when speaking to the Alamance County Republican Party, McCrory changed direction again, “advocating vouchers” for private schools. [Burlington Times-News, 8/24/08]
“Pat McCrory might not want to admit it to North Carolina’s educators, but he supports a private school voucher scheme that will drain $900 million from our public schools,” said Bev Perdue spokesman Tim Crowley.
