Dole/Bush Team Fought to Privatize Social Security

Today is the 73rd anniversary of the Social Security Act becoming law, and though millions of hardworking Americans benefit from its provisions, Elizabeth Dole certainly isn’t celebrating.

She has been an outspoken advocate for privatization – voting to raid the fund’s surpluses, allowing the program to be subjected to the whims of the stock market and even going so far as to campaign with President Bush for this drastic and unpopular alternative.

DOLE/BUSH TEAM FOUGHT TO PRIVATIZE SOCIAL SECURITY

“Like President Bush,” Dole Supports Partial Privatization. Discussing privatization in September 2002, the Charlotte Observer wrote, “Dole, like President Bush, supports a partial investment program.” [Charlotte Observer, 9/17/02]

North Carolina Seniors Rally against McCain’s Privatization Plan

Current and future Social Security recipients came together today to sound the alarm on the long term economic impact the McCain-Bush style privatization plan for Social Security would have on North Carolinians.

According to a report from the Campaign for America’s Future released today, McCain’s privatization plan would place an incredible burden on North Carolina’s communities and families to provide for the basic necessities Social Security now provides.

“Senator McCain has been quite clear, offering more of the same failed Bush economic policies and saying that he believes that the way Social Security works is a disgrace,” said Reva McNair, president of Senior Democrats of North Carolina.

McCain Wants to Privatize Social Security

During a town hall meeting in New Hampshire yesterday, John McCain told the voters, "I am not for privatizing Social Security. I never have been. I never will be."

But as a new video released by the Democratic National Committee shows, Senator McCain clearly does support privatizing Social Security.

In 2004, Senator McCain said "without privatization, I don't see how you can possibly, over time, make sure that young Americans are able to receive Social Security benefits."

In 2005 Senator McCain hit the road with President Bush to help promote the President's failed effort to promote private accounts. In fact, as recently as March 2008, McCain told the Wall Street Journal he still supports President Bush's plan and is "totally in favor of personal savings accounts."

First Day of School and Thompson Still Hasn't Done His Homework

After his much delayed entry into the GOP presidential contest, lobbyist turned Senator turned actor Fred Thompson finally made his debate debut tonight and it's unlikely he impressed any of his many critics. While he didn't have to beg for a round of applause this time, he hadn't done his homework, getting his facts wrong on Social Security, manufacturing job loss and even his own positions.

THOMPSON WRONG ON MANUFACTURING JOBS

RHETORIC: More Jobs Now Then Before. Asked about the "Three quarters of manufacturing workers who lose their jobs and get new ones see their income go down," Thompson said that "there are jobs lost and jobs gained. And so far there are jobs gained."
