While Senate Republicans can’t even agree on a total spending amount, North Carolina Democrats are focused on investing in a shared recovery as the state emerges from the pandemic. Rep. Wesley Harris joined Capital Tonight to discuss how the General Assembly is moving forward with budget talks and outlined the opportunities that are possible with the billions of dollars in unspent revenue.
Highlighting the critical needs that could be addressed, Rep. Harris said: “The way I think we should look at a budget is to say ‘what does our state need right now’ and then work from there. Our education infrastructure, our transportation infrastructure, those are some really big problems we have to tackle and we’re not going to be able to do that if we keep slashing our corporate and franchise taxes and giving giveaways to our highest income earners. Hopefully Republicans will look at what we need and what the opportunities we have with this budget can actually be so we can move forward with something that’s going to benefit everyone across the state.”
