NCDP Statement on the 155th Anniversary of Juneteenth
North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Goodwin and the Party’s African American Caucus President Felita Donnell issued the following statement to commemorate the 155th Anniversary of Juneteenth:
“On Juneteenth, we honor the millions of lives that were lost to slavery on our shores as well as those who survived and fought to end it; we celebrate the many contributions of African American culture to our country; and we recommit ourselves to the vast work that remains in the struggle for justice in the United States.
“The events and demonstrations of recent weeks have been an unmistakable reminder that the lingering consequences of slavery and segregation continue to burden our society every day, and that our work in this cause is far from over. We hope today will be an opportunity for all North Carolinians to mark this solemn occasion and resolve to each do our part to break down the systemic racism that still oppresses African Americans.
“As long as the African American Community does not fully share in the dream and opportunity of this country, North Carolina Democrats will continue to press on in the struggle for justice.”
