A year ago today, despite millions of voters turning out to elect President Biden, the former president continues to parrot claims that the “real insurrection” was on November 3rd — when he lost the presidency.
As the Republican Party fully embraces lies about the 2020 election, here is a reminder of what the GOP field of U.S. Senate candidates have said about the Capital insurrection on January 6th, 2021.
- Congressman Budd voted to overturn the 2020 elections and has sided with Trump time and again when it comes to peddling election lies and questioning the legitimacy of our elections. In August, he even said of the Capitol insurrection: “It was nothing. It was just patriots standing up.”
- Former Governor Pat McCrory downplayed Trump’s role in the insurrection, saying that “the second impeachment shouldn’t have happened because it was the rioters, rather than Trump, who were culpable for the attack in January on the Capitol.” In April, he told CNN that he’d “welcome” Trump’s endorsement and would support him if he ran again in 2024.
- Former Congressman Mark Walker formally backed a Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and “declined to answer” the Charlotte Observer’s question about whether he would’ve voted to certify Joe Biden’s victory.
“This weak field of candidates is proving that they are willing to side with lies and conspiracies over standing up for democracy if it benefits their own political agenda,” said NCDP spokesperson Kate Frauenfelder. “North Carolina deserves better than political opportunists who have proven that they will put their party over the country.”
