As GOP Lawsuit Moves Forward, Tillis Has Already Confirmed He Supports Ending Protections for Pre-Existing Conditions
Republicans are plowing forward with their effort to overturn the Affordable Care Act in the courts today, even though the current pandemic has exposed Senator Tillis and Republicans’ positions on health care as dangerous and out-of-step with North Carolinians.
The Affordable Care Act protects North Carolinians hurt by the coronavirus from being denied coverage for a pre-existing condition or charged more for their care, yet Republicans – with Senator Tillis’ support – are arguing to eliminate the entire law and those protections. Tillis has consistently jeopardized North Carolinians’ health care:
- Tillis confirmed his support for the ACA lawsuit while battling a nasty Republican primary. When asked about the lawsuit last fall, Tillis said, “I support anything that ultimately takes [the ACA] off the table.”
- Tillis said voting against protections for pre-existing conditions was “courageous.” Tillis has not only voted to take away protections for pre-existing conditions, but he’s also said that it was “courageous” and that “we need to take out the underpinnings of the Affordable Care Act.”
- Tillis blocked the state from expanding Medicaid which would help cover coronavirus treatment. Last year, Tillis boasted, “I am the Speaker of the House who signed the bill that made it illegal to expand Medicaid under Obamacare.”
- Tillis knows he’s incredibly vulnerable on health care, which is why he parrots a sham bill to paper over their disastrous record. Tillis’ bill “does not address other core parts of the health law that could be struck down,” “falls short,” and could even allow “companies to deny certain coverage,” while reports have panned it as a “false promise” and “political cover” that “would do little to protect people with pre-existing conditions.”
“Even amid a global public health crisis, Republicans are still pushing to eliminate protections for North Carolinians with pre-existing conditions with Senator Tillis’ full support,” NCDP spokesman Robert Howard said. “Senator Tillis and Washington Republicans will never stop trying to take away North Carolina’s health care and the protections many families depend on, which is why we will elect new leaders to the Senate this November.”
